Prof. Shahar Shelly

Neurologist · Neuromuscular & Neuroimmunology Specialist
“World class expertise. Personal, attentive care.”

Prof. Shahar Shelly is one of Israel's leading neurologists, specializing in neuromuscular diseases and neuroimmunology. After completing his neurology residency with distinction at Sheba Medical Center, Tel HaShomer, he undertook a fellowship at Mayo Clinic (2018–2021), where he and his colleagues discovered the antibody responsible for neurochondrin-associated ataxia — a finding now used worldwide for the diagnosis of malignancies. In 2024, Prof. Shelly was appointed Chair of the Department of Neurology at Rambam Health Care Campus, home to the largest neuromuscular unit in northern Israel. He also serves as Full Professor at the Technion and directs a research laboratory integrating artificial intelligence with clinical neurology.

About Prof. Shelly

A Physician, Researcher & Innovator

Prof. Shahar Shelly is a leading Israeli neurologist specializing in neuromuscular diseases and neuroimmunology. After completing his medical degree with distinction at the University of Debrecen, he trained in neurology at Sheba Medical Center and pursued a prestigious fellowship at Mayo Clinic (2018–2021), where he co-discovered the antibody responsible for neurochondrin-associated ataxia — now used in routine malignancy screening worldwide.

In 2024 he was appointed Chair of the Neurology Department at Rambam — the largest neuromuscular unit in northern Israel — while continuing his role as Head of Neuroimmunology at the Technion and directing the AI Neurology Laboratory, which integrates machine learning with clinical neuroscience.

Sub-Specialty

Myasthenia Gravis Expert

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks the connection between nerves and muscles. This causes muscles to tire quickly — leading to drooping eyelids, double vision, difficulty swallowing or speaking, and in some cases serious breathing problems.

Prof. Shelly is one of Israel's leading MG specialists. He led the writing of Israel's first national clinical guidelines for MG, has published over 13 peer reviewed papers on the disease, co-authored an editorial in the New England Journal of Medicine, and treats complex MG patients at both Rambam and his private clinic.

Accurate Diagnosis
Including antibody testing algorithms developed at Mayo Clinic to reduce misdiagnosis.
Personalised Treatment
From standard immunosuppression to the newest FDA-approved biologic therapies (efgartigimod, rituximab).
Multidisciplinary Care
Coordinating with thoracic surgeons, oncologists, and pulmonologists for comprehensive management.

MG Research Highlights

Selected publications — explained in plain language.

Editorial: Redemption for B-Cell Depletion in MG
Written with leading MG expert Prof. Gil Wolfe — published in the New England Journal of Medicine (2025). In plain terms: drugs that "switch off" specific immune cells show great promise for controlling MG long term.
2025 · New England Journal of Medicine
Israel's National Guidelines for MG Diagnosis & Treatment
Led by Prof. Shelly — the first official Israeli roadmap for how every neurologist in the country should diagnose and treat MG, tailored to each patient's antibody type and disease severity.
2025 · Therapeutic Advances in Neurological Disorders
Real world Results: Efgartigimod in MG Patients
86% of MG patients improved significantly after the first treatment cycle of efgartigimod — a new drug that "mops up" the harmful antibodies causing MG — and many were able to reduce their steroid doses.
2024 · Journal of Neurology
Smarter Blood Tests: Reducing MG Misdiagnosis by 45%
A new sequential testing algorithm developed at Mayo Clinic dramatically reduces false positive MG diagnoses — meaning fewer patients go through unnecessary treatments for a disease they don't have.
2020 · Neurology
Thymectomy (Thymus Surgery) Improves Survival in MG
MG patients who had their thymus gland surgically removed had the best survival outcomes, with zero deaths in that group — supporting surgery as a highly beneficial treatment option for eligible patients.
